Who would you guess was the most influential royal household in Europe between the Middle Ages and modern times? Starting when Rudolf I was elected to lead the Holy Roman Empire in 1273, the House of Habsburg quickly rose to stand at the heart of history. From Rudolf I through the reign of Charles I of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, who stepped down from the throne in 1918 at the end of the First World War, the Habsburgs were at the center of European politics, economics, and art for more than 600 years.

The Habsburgs are also well known as patrons of artists who are now considered canonical in Western art - Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony Van Dyck, and Diego Velázquez. The House of Habsburg’s support of artists with names that make our hearts flutter just by hearing them was based on the family’s philosophy of appreciating and collecting art.

The special exhibition Six Centuries of Beauty in the Habsburg Empire presents ninety-six masterpieces that were collected by the Habsburgs and are currently housed at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. Also on display is a gift King Gojong presented to Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1892 to mark the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Austria that is being presented in Korea for the first time in 130 years.

The Habsburgs were well aware that art is both knowledge and power.
