The Aztec Empire, which was located in present-day Mexico, came to an end in 1521. The Aztecs formed a thriving culture and history, but they still remain unfamiliar to many of us. We are mostly told of the brutality of their war and sacrificial rituals and the story involving the fall of the Aztecs, as in they supposedly thought the Spanish conquistadors as returned Aztec gods. As one of the greatest Mesoamerican cultures, however, the Aztec Empire was one of the three most dominant and advanced civilizations together with the Mayas and the Incas in the Americas.

This exhibition attempts to tell the fascinating stories of their strong will to thank their gods and sustain the world, a belief that had been obscured by the practices of human sacrifices. The exhibition explores the great artistic, intellectual, economic, and political development of the Aztecs that flourished in Mesoamerica, presenting precious collections from 11 museums in Mexico and Europe as well as newly discovered findings never shown to the public.

With the Spanish conquistador as well their indigenous allies and the diseases brought from Europe, the mighty Aztec Empire abruptly disappeared. Now, centuries later, the legacy of the Aztec Empire still continues to live on. Its culture has served as the foundation of contemporary Mexican culture, and its culinary tradition is enjoyed by all people around the world. This year, marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Korea, we take a fresh, deeper look at the stories of the Aztec Empire.
