We would like to introduce you to the lives of seventy-six people as projected in their portraits and discuss the genre of portraiture.

A portrait is both simple and multifaceted, and unfamiliar yet immediately engaging at the same time. Viewing a portrait involves a visual and mental dance between looking at an image and engaging with the person represented, because they reflect our own selves.

This exhibition provides a rare opportunity to enjoy a large number of portraits of figures who have enriched the history and culture of the world over the last 500 years. The exhibition consists of five thematic sections – “Fame,” “Power,” “Love and Loss,” “Innovation,” and “Identity & Self-portrait.” These themes will help visitors examine the diverse meanings of portraits.

Particularly in this exhibition, viewers can meet and mentally interact with figures who have left an indelible mark on the culture and history of the world. These eminent personages include William Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth I, Isaac Newton, The Beatles, and Ed Sheeran. While enjoying the exhibition, try to make eye contact with the sitter and imagine his or her life. This gaze into the sitter’s eyes and face might become ingrained in your mind.
