The situation of the later period of Unified Silla, which was then divided into three kingdoms, was completed by Goryeo Dynasty’s unification of the Later Three Kingdoms (the 19th year of the rule of King Taejo). The second unified dynasty in the Korean history, Goryeo
Dynasty developed brilliant aristocratic culture as well as unique celadon culture in the 12 century. Goryeo people operated the government system in line with the empire. To cite some examples, they called their king a son of Heaven or emperor, the royal family an
imperial family, the order of the King an imperial order or royal order. While it is true that they rendered tribute to and worshipped the Song Dynasty, the Kitan, and Jin Dynasty, they were no more than their formal foreign policies. The reason Goryeo Dynasty could call itself as
the state of a son of Heaven stemmed from its high pride as a country that unified the Later Three Kingdoms and had a self-recognition that Goryeo Dynasty was another center of the world in the multilateral international order of the era.
