Goguryeo Room is composed of several sub-themes encompassing its history and culture. In the first theme, “Establish a country and build castles”, we can get a glimpse into the advent of ancient state, Goguryeo through Goguryeo’s prestige goods that symbolized the
authority of the ruling class and social status. And “Goguryeo’s tombs, the borderland between life and passing” features its characteristic large tombs that expressed the ruling powers and authority possessed in the area of life in the space of passing, helping us to explore
key features of the mainstream culture and people’s minds of the time. Goguryeo relied on great military power based on excellent horse-riding strategies to lead society and grew with it. Under the theme, “Territory expansion, head to the continent”, illustrates Goguryeo’s iron
armored cavalry that actively served to expand the state territory in fierce and complicated confrontation in East Asia. In addition, through “Namjin, to cross Arisoo”, you can see the fruits of Goguryeo remains excavation and investigation around Seoul, Gyeonggi,
Chungchungdo where we can see the cultural identity of the state that expanded its influence to the southern side of the Han River. In the stable political and social state based on great military power, Buddhism founded an essential axis in organizing and sustaining the
Goguryeo society and actively distributed to society under the support from the state and the royal family. In the theme, “countless Buddhas, seek countless awareness”, you can get the general idea of Buddhist thoughts and arts in society. Furthermore, “daily life of
Goguryeo people” offers an opportunity to peek into the life of Goguryeo people through the subjects of various artifacts and tomb murals. In Goguryeo Room, as there is a themed exhibition inspired by copies of Goguryeo tomb murals owned by the National Museum of Korea,
presenting an opportunity to encounter various daily lives and thoughts of Goguryeo people.
